How Security Professionals Should Behave

Security professionals should always present themselves as respectful, and well-groomed individuals. A security professional should be enhancing the clients appearance, not diminishing it. I have learned over the years that security is much more effective when you are respected by the people you interact with. A well-groomed, and respectful security guard will be far more effective during interactions than a guard who looks like they couldn’t care less about themselves or the clients they protect.

It is crucial to always maintain professionalism, even in situations that push and challenge you. As important as appearance is, it is just as important to communicate effectively. Security personnel should always be looking for opportunities to improve the safety of the site they are assigned.

This means taking note of broken or malfunctioning equipment, actively preventing things that may lead to a slip, trip, or fall, and generally looking for methods to reduce risk of any kind.

There is an endless amount of circumstances that you may find yourself in as a security guard, and it is important to understand that being prepared for those instances can save you in the long run. Just because it is extremely unlikely for something to happen does not mean that it won’t, often issues arise when you least expect them, so be diligent, and always remain professional.
